Warren Wilson College, also known as WWC, is a private 4 year work college located in the Swannanoa Valley in North Carolina. The school is known for its curriculum of work, which is also known as “the Triad”. This curriculum requires each student to work an on-campus job, perform at least a hundred hours of community service over their time with the school. Other requirements include a complete requisite course of academic work before they are able to graduate. WWC also offers classes in more than 30 different departments. Among the most popular courses offered include English, Environmental Sciences, and Outdoor Leadership.
The college is also known for its surrounding environment. The main campus is made up of 300 acres of farm land, a market garden, and over 600 acres of maintained forest, which also provides the community with 25 miles of hiking trail. In addition to traditional majors such as Biology and English, undergrads also have the option of choosing a major from a wide array of courses. There is also an undergraduate research and presentation program called the Natural Science Seminar that is required for all Bachelor of Science degrees given by the college. Since 1981, the Warren Wilson College has also started offering a Master’s program, which includes a MFA Program for writers.
The WWC campus maintains 14 residence halls. Among them are Sunderland Hall for first year residents. The EcoDorm is another dorm which is known for featuring an active permaculture garden. Sage Hall is known for its student-run coffeehouse, called Sage Cafe, located in the lower level, which provides a space for local bands, open mics, studying, and food for the residents. The school colors are blue and gold and the school nickname are the Owls.
